Orpheus' "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" a first for Ottawa

OTTAWA, May 16 /CNW/ - For the first time ever, Ottawa audiences will get to enjoy the Broadway hit musical "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" when the Orpheus Musical Theatre Society production opens June 3 -12 at Ottawa's Centrepointe Theatre.

The musical is based on the popular 1988 film of the same name, which featured Michael Caine and Steve Martin. The Musical version, written by David Yazbek and Jeffrey Lane, is a raucous comedy set on the French Riviera and follows the antics of 2 con men that meet and compete in seducing and bilking rich, corrupt women. The Broadway version, starring John Lithgow and Norbert Leo Butz as the Scoundrels, opened in 2005 and won 7 Tony Awards.

The Orpheus production is directed by Shaun Toohey, a veteran Ottawa actor and director with Orpheus who appeared onstage last year as one of the stars of the Orpheus production of "The Producers." Toohey feels the production exudes the kind of appeal that Ottawa audiences crave. "It's a witty, bawdy comedy, with a drop-dead hilarious script and some very catchy and clever songs," Toohey said. "It's a crowd-pleaser."

Orpheus has a long history of bringing new musicals to Ottawa audiences. Last year's "The Producers" and "The Full Monty" in 2009 were also premieres for the region, and played to enthusiastic audiences and critical acclaim, both winning recognition as the Best Community Theatre Production by the Capital Critics Circle.  Will "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" stage a three-peat for Orpheus? Toohey is more focused on the production quality. "We are confident that audiences will love this show. It's got amazing dancing, music and singing - everything that makes a hit musical," he said.

Rounding out the directing team, Wendy Berkelaar of Ottawa is Musical Director and Chantale Kutkewich of Carp makes her Orpheus debut as Choreographer. Starring in the Orpheus production will be Rob Henderson, David McLaughlin and Shawna McSheffrey, all veteran musical theatre performers from Ottawa.

"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" is the final production of Orpheus' 2010-2011 season, which also included "Annie" and "Into the Woods."

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels opens June 3 and runs to June 12 at Nepean's Centrepointe Theatre with evening and matinee performances.  Tickets are can be purchased online at www.centrepointetheatre.com, by phone at 613-580-2700 or in person at the Centrepointe Theatre box office.  Adult prices begin at $30 with discounts available for seniors and students.

The Orpheus Musical Theatre Society is North America's longest continuously operating community musical theatre society.  Founded in 1906, it stages 3 musical productions a year at Centrepointe Theatre in Nepean.
