Opsens Launches New Signal Conditioner For Power Transformer Sector

PowerSens II Offers Industry-Leading Reliability And Total System

    QUEBEC CITY, Feb. 2 /CNW Telbec/ - Opsens Inc. (TSX-V:OPS) today
increased its competitiveness in the worldwide market for power transformer
temperature sensors by launching the new PowerSens II signal conditioner.
"PowerSens II takes our fiber optic temperature monitoring systems in the
transformer market to the next level," said Pierre Carrier, president and CEO.
"This is an important market segment for Opsens and we are committed to
expanding our leadership position within it."
PowerSens II is a second generation signal conditioner, which receives
temperature signals from the sensing units located in transformer windings.
The conditioner transforms the signals into temperature readouts or transmits
data to a utility control center.
Temperature sensors are relied upon by transformer manufacturers to
qualify their products prior to delivery and by utilities to manage the
performance of installed equipment. Sensors also contribute to ongoing
maintenance and performance measurement by providing information that enables
transformer load optimization, accurate evaluation of insulation aging,
cooling equipment management and validation of theoretical formulas.
While developing PowerSens II, Opsens improved instrument reliability and
increased system accuracy to +/- 0.8degrees Celsius. Combining PowerSens II
with either the OTG-T or OTG-T+ fiber optic sensors creates a temperature
sensor solution for transformer hot-spot monitoring with an unmatched level of
total accuracy.
"Sales of our transformer winding monitoring systems are constantly
growing, and we are shipping instruments on all five continents," said Yves
Plamondon, Vice President, Sales and Marketing. "We expect PowerSens II to
accelerate the growth of our transformer division around the world."
Fiber optics temperature sensors are the preferred technology for
transformer monitoring because they are transparent and immune to
electromagnetic interference.
"PowerSens II is the most reliable and accurate fiber optic signal
conditioner currently available in the power transformer industry," said
Claude Belleville, Vice President, Research and Development. "We incorporated
internal reference technology that allows the PowerSens II conditioner to
constantly monitor performance and adjust internal calibration when required.
This feature enables PowerSens II to compensate for external temperature
variations, component aging, mechanical shocks and transformer vibrations. The
result is significantly enhanced accuracy and reliability."
In addition, Opsens has implemented a fully traceable new calibration
method that assures long term traceability of both the PowerSens II and the
OTG-T family of fiber optic sensors. Combined with the internal reference of
the PowerSens II, this new calibration method provides unparalleled
reliability to Opsens transformer temperature monitoring devices.
In view of these major improvements, Opsens now provides a six-year
warranty on all PowerSens II and PicoP signal conditioners supplied to the
power transformer industry.
