Opportunity International Canada - Calgary Rallies Support for Microfinance

A One-Day Golf Tournament That Will Impact Peru for Decades

CALGARY, June 10 /CNW/ - The Opportunity Golf Tournament, Calgary's
largest-funded charitable golf tournament, returned to Springbank Links on
May 28, 2008. The $452,000 donated at this year's event has been designated
towards Opportunity International Canada's microfinance initiative in Peru,
which aims to help thousands of impoverished Peruvians start small businesses
and rise above the poverty line.
"This year's funding means that approximately 5,300 Peruvian
entrepreneurs will be able to start moving out of poverty this next year,"
commented tournament organizer Don Dufault. "This single day in Calgary will
have an enduring effect on the barrios of Peru for decades."
Microfinance has become acclaimed as a poverty-reduction method because
it seeks to empower recipients rather than create dependencies on hand-outs.
By providing the necessary tools to grow a small business, microfinance
organizations like Opportunity International Canada help the poor develop
steady incomes and provide for their families-even in the face of the global
food crisis.
Over the past six years, the tournament has raised nearly $1.2 million in
total for microfinance initiatives.
Opportunity International Canada has provided microloans to low-income
entrepreneurs in Peru since 2003. From 2003-2006, Opportunity's initiative in
Peru grew by a dramatic 480%. Funds from this year's tournament will enable
Opportunity to expand services in Northern Lima and initiate operations in the
Eastern Cone of Lima.
"The day was a great success," remarked Opportunity Vice President Doris
Olafsen. "The sun was shining, the volunteers were tireless, and the
generosity of the participants was again overwhelming."

Opportunity International serves over 1 million clients around the world,
helping them find their own way out of poverty through small loans, savings,
insurance and business training services.
