Open House Event on the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador

"We are spirited and proud peoples"
                           - Chief Ghislain Picard
<p><location>Quebec</location> City, <chron>June 17</chron> /CNW Telbec/ - About a hundred persons from different activity sectors will participate in a public event on <chron>Friday June 19th</chron>, in Trois-Rivières, namely the "Open House Event on the First Nations of <location>Quebec</location> and Labrador", under the initiative of the Assembly of the First Nations of <location>Quebec</location> and Labrador (AFNQL). A press conference will follow the event.</p>
<p>It will be the 3rd edition of this awareness activity which contributes in creating bonds between the AFNQL and numerous socioeconomic groups of <location>Quebec</location>. "Our nations are spirited and proud", states the Chief of the AFNQL, Ghislain Picard, adding that "it is in the interest of the <location>Quebec</location> society as a whole to become more aware of First Nations' realities".</p>
<p>During this awareness gathering, several speakers will address various issues related to the recognition of political and territorial rights of the First Nations. They will present different pictures of the First Nations, by bringing certain notions of law within everyone's reach and by explaining the recent initiative adopted by the Chiefs on a process of affirmation of sovereignty of the First Nations. The AFNQL will insist on the fact that the First Nations form distinct nations, and that they have a right to self-determination which is recognized in particular by the United Nations Organization (UN). By virtue of this right, these nations are at liberty to determine their political status and to ensure without obstruction their economic, social and cultural development. "We have the responsibility to make our realities better known to those with whom we share this territory, without really knowing us", states the Chief of the AFNQL, Ghislain Picard.</p>
<p>This interactive and convivial activity is a concrete gesture of the will of the AFNQL to establish bonds with institutions of the civil society, private enterprise as well as municipalities adjacent to the communities of Quebec's First Nations.</p>
<p>The media are invited to attend this special day. The AFNQL Chief, <person>Mr. Ghislain Picard</person>, will proceed with a press conference following the end of the event and will be available for individual interviews.</p>
