TORONTO, Nov. 15, 2011 /CNW/ - Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Ontario's Information
and Privacy Commissioner, was honoured today by Women of Influence Inc.
with an award marking her selection as one of Canada's most influential
This announcement follows in the footsteps of Commissioner Cavoukian's
award in 2007 from the Women's Executive Network as one of the Top 100
Most Powerful Women in Canada. Cited as a "Trailblazer and
Trendsetter," the Commissioner was lauded for her proactive and
innovative work in the protection of privacy.
Women of Influence Inc., in its first annual list of the Top 25 Women of
Influence, named the Commissioner today as one of the honourees for her
groundbreaking work in protecting privacy. Commissioner Cavoukian, who
has won a number of awards both in Canada and internationally, is
recognized as one of the leading privacy experts in the world. The
purpose of the Top 25 is to provide national recognition to Canada's
top female leaders, whose successful achievements have made positive
contributions to Canada and the world. In its first year, the Top 25
Women of Influence will highlight the achievements of 25 women across
Canada in the Winter Issue of the Women of Influence Magazine.
"I am deeply honoured at being included in this distinguished group of
women, and hope to shine greater attention to the pursuit of preserving
our freedoms, which are built upon a bedrock of privacy," said
"I applaud Women of Influence Inc. for their ongoing work in drawing
attention to the outstanding accomplishments of Canadian women. I
believe it is important to share these success stories to inspire our
next generation of female leaders."
Serving an unprecedented third term as Commissioner, Commissioner
Cavoukian is an avowed believer in the role that technology can play in
protecting privacy. Commissioner Cavoukian's leadership has seen her
office develop a number of tools and procedures to ensure that privacy
is protected in Ontario - and around the world. Commissioner Cavoukian
is well known for her creation of "Privacy by Design" - the requirement to proactively embed privacy directly into
technologies, accountable business practices, and networked
infrastructure, as the default condition.
