Ontario Liberals only party with positive plan for more child care

Full day pre-school will free up 20,000 spaces and save families up to

TORONTO, Oct. 4 /CNW/ - Ontario Liberals are the only party with a track
record of building new quality, affordable child care spaces, and the only
party with a positive plan to increase access to child care, Liberal Campaign
Chair Greg Sorbara said today.
"More children are in high quality child care spaces today because of the
investments we've made together," said Sorbara. "And our plan to have full day
pre-school will free up even more child care spaces for younger children."
While the Harris Tory party took money meant for child care spaces and
instead used it for tax giveaways, Ontario Liberals have invested in child
care building 22,000 new, quality, affordable spaces across Ontario.
The next step in the Ontario Liberal plan is to have full day pre-school
for children, which will save families approx. $6,400 and free up an
additional 20,000 child care spaces for younger children.
"We have made giving Ontario children then best start in life a priority
for our government," said Sorbara. "Families deserve the peace of mind of
knowing their children are in good hands in quality, affordable child care."
Experts agree with the Ontario Liberal plan for child care.
Margaret McCain, Co-author of the Early Years Study said: "This
commitment to full day pre-school imbeds the key recommendations of the Early
Years Study for universal access to quality early childhood programming linked
to public education. It is also good science. Pre-school is when children
develop the emotional and social skills needed to succeed in school."
Kerry McCuaig, a child care researcher and advocate: "This is good public
policy. It delivers a double-barrelled punch providing a full day of early
learning to all five year olds as it creates new spaces and resources to
address child care needs."
Sorbara noted neither the NDP or Conservatives have a comprehensive child
care plan, and that both voted against increased investments in child care
spaces and against the Ontario Child Benefit.
"Only the Liberal Party would implement full day pre-school and expand
access to child care to help Ontario families," said Sorbara.
