Choosing CANDU will create more jobs and economic benefits for Ontario
than foreign technology
TORONTO, Nov. 30 /CNW/ - The Organization of CANDU Industries (OCI) is
urging the Ontario government to follow its own advice to Ontarians and "shop
Ontario" by choosing CANDU for new base load electricity supply. Choosing
CANDU will help boost the export potential of our made-in-Canada CANDUs and
generate more jobs and economic benefits for Ontario than foreign technology.
"CANDU is Ontario's best choice for new nuclear power supply," says OCI
President Martyn Wash. "At a time when Ontario is losing manufacturing jobs at
an alarming rate, choosing CANDU is an antidote to job loss. Ontario's CANDU
industry currently employs 25,000 highly-skilled, educated people and
generates more than $4 billion into the province's economy. Choosing CANDU for
Ontario will preserve these high-value, high-paying jobs. It will also help
create thousands of new jobs and billions in economic benefits for Ontario -
equivalent to the economic benefits generated by one automotive plant. It all
starts with choosing CANDU."
The Organization of CANDU Industries represents 101 companies in Ontario
supplying goods and services for CANDU reactors built in both domestic and
"CANDU has unique competitive advantages over foreign technology," says
Wash. "The record shows that CANDU is the best performing reactors in the
world, and we have the best project management record for on-time, on-budget
delivery. That comes from OCI member companies - the CANDU supply chain -
being mobilized and ready to go and having the best and deepest capacity to
The construction of two of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's advanced
CANDUs will generate between 81,000 and 95,000 person years of employment.
According to a recent study by the Canadian Energy Research Institute, 20,000
to 22,000 person years of employment would be lost if a foreign technology was
chosen over CANDU.
In addition, the CANDU industry generates more than $500 million in tax
revenues to the province annually, with more than $4 billion in tax revenues
forecasted from projected CANDU export opportunities over the next 20-30
