Ontario And Maharashtra, India Form Joint Business Council

Paves Way For Business Opportunities Between Ontario Companies And Key
    India State

MUMBAI, India, Jan. 16 /CNW/ - In a move to enhance cooperation and
create business opportunities between their two jurisdictions, Ontario
Economic Development and Trade Minister Sandra Pupatello and Maharashtra
Industries Minister Ashok Chavan announced the creation of a business council
comprised of business and government leaders from both jurisdictions.
"This is an important step that will help create opportunities for
companies in both our regions and provide greater prosperity for families in
Ontario and Maharashtra," said Pupatello. "To underscore the importance of
this council, Minister Chavan and I will act as its co-chairs. We believe
strongly, we can strengthen the growing Ontario-India relationship."
The two ministers met as a follow up to Pupatello's successful meeting
with Chaven last year. At that time the two signed a Joint Declaration to
promote cooperation and foster partnerships in the Information and
Communications Technology, Automotive and Environmental Technologies, Life
Sciences, Renewable Energy, and Infrastructure sectors. The Joint Declaration
also established a framework for a business council.
The business council's first meeting, to take place next month via a
video conference, will introduce its members and discuss the council's mandate
and goals. The official launch is scheduled to occur in June 2008 to coincide
with Minister Chavan's visit to Ontario.
Minister Pupatello is in India leading a business mission of
12 automotive parts firms at the India Auto Expo. She is also meeting with
influential business and government leaders to discuss commercial business
opportunities for Ontario. "We're working hard to secure and generate
high-value jobs for Ontarians," said Pupatello.
