TORONTO, Jan. 23 /CNW/ - The 3rd International Holcim Awards for
Sustainable Construction will close for registration on March 23, 2011.

recognizes and celebrates innovative, future-oriented and tangible
projects and visions from around the globe and is open to: sustainable
building and civil engineering works; landscape, urban design and
infrastructure projects; and materials, products and construction
technologies. Entries must be submitted online at www.holcimawards.org
Outstanding Canadian winning projects in the previous competition cycles
include Greening the Infrastructure at Benny Farm in Montreal which won Gold in the 2005 North American competition and
Bronze in the Global phase in 2006. In 2008, Living with Lakes Centre for freshwater restoration and research in Sudbury, Ontario, was honored with the Bronze award in the North
American competition. Evergreen Brick Works in Toronto won an Acknowledgement Prize that same year.
Evergreen Brick Works transformed the former Don Valley Brick Works in Toronto from a
collection of deteriorating heritage buildings into an international
showcase for urban sustainability and green design.
"Participating in the Holcim Awards process opened our eyes to the
larger world of sustainable construction. We learned a great deal about
how people from every corner of the planet are defining and pursuing
sustainability. The experience helped us make better 'green' decisions
in the final stages of detailed design and construction for our
project. The prestigious nature of the award in the design and
construction industry helped us attract new partners to the project,"
said David Stonehouse, General Manager, Evergreen Brick Works.
The 3rd International Holcim Awards competition is comprised of five
regional competitions in 2010/11 - North America, Latin America,
Europe, Africa Middle East, and Asia Pacific - and a global phase in
2012. Submissions are evaluated by independent juries of
internationally renowned architects and academics, using five "target
issues" to define sustainable construction. Three of these issues align
with the triple bottom line concept of a balanced social, environmental
and economic performance. The rest cover contextual and aesthetic
impact, innovation and transferability.
Two Canadians are on the jury for the region of North America: Dr.
Raymond Cole, Professor at the University of British Columbia's School
of Architecture and Professor Mark West of the University of Manitoba.
The North American jury is headed by Professor Mohsen Mostafavi, dean
of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. View the full list
of North American jury members at: http://www.holcimfoundation.org/T1133/HA11-jury.htm
The Holcim Awards have two categories: a Main category for projects at an advanced stage of design, for which
construction must have started after July 1, 2010, and a "Next Generation" category to which university students can submit their visions and
ideas that is open to those in the final year of their bachelor program
or above (including Masters and PhD programs). Step-by-step
instructions on how to enter the competition are available at: www.holcimawards.org/guides
