    TORONTO, Sept. 17 /CNW/ - Governor John Graves Simcoe convenes the first
meeting of the legislature of Upper Canada at Newark (Niagara).

    September 17, 1878: Conservative John A. Macdonald defeats Liberal
Alexander Mackenzie in the first Canadian federal election to feature a secret
ballot and simultaneous voting. Previous elections were carried out over
several days.

    September 17, 2003: Dalton McGuinty makes another promise to the people
of Ontario:

        "...(W)e will...provide loan forgiveness to students who choose
        family medicine. (Ontario Liberal Party press release)

    Four years later, Dalton McGuinty still hasn't provided loan forgiveness
for students choosing family medicine.
    Dalton McGuinty's promise to provide loan forgiveness to students who
choose family medicine...it's one more promise that he was quick to make but
failed to keep.
