Olympian Hans Fogh to act as Honorary Commodore for Toronto Area Hospice Regatta

Perram House hospice to benefit from funds raised at Regatta

TORONTO, May 22 /CNW/ - The Toronto Area Hospice Regatta (TAHR) and
Perram House, a residential hospice offering palliative care, today announced
that Hans Fogh, two-time Olympic medalist, will serve as the Honourary
Commodore for the 2nd annual Toronto Area Hospice Regatta, to take place June
20th and 21st at the National Yacht Club in Toronto.
Hans Fogh has participated in more Olympics than any other sailor in the
world and was a member of the Canadian National Sailing Team for more than
twenty years. In the 1960 Olympics in Rome, Hans Fogh won a silver medal in
the Flying Dutchman, while representing Denmark. Twenty-four years later, at
the Olympics held in Los Angeles, Hans won a bronze medal for Canada in the
Soling. Hans was also inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1985 and
inducted into Canada's Amateur Hall of Fame in 1986.
"A premier sailing event, the Hospice Regatta gathers world-class sailors
from North America for a very important cause," said Richard Reid, Chairman of
TAHR. "This year we are thrilled to have Hans Fogh, a sailor of the highest
caliber, as our honorary commodore. His participation will raise the profile
of the regatta to the benefit of an invaluable service in our community:
providing a home to people with a life-threatening illness."
"I'm fortunate to be in a position to leverage my passion for sailing to
give back to the community doing what I love, while benefiting a very worthy
cause," said Hans Fogh. "I am very proud to be the Honourary Commodore for the
Toronto Area Hospice Regatta."
The 2009 TAHR will mark the second year of ING DIRECT's lead sponsorship
of the event, which in 2008 raised more than $40,000 for Perram House.
Up to 50 racing boats from across Ontario and the United States, divided
among at least four One Design Classes, are expected to participate in the
2009 Toronto Area Hospice Regatta. Affiliated with the National Hospice
Regatta Alliance in the U.S., this year's Overall Regatta Winner will
represent Toronto in the National Hospice Regatta Alliance Championships next
spring. (Find more about the Toronto Area Hospice Regatta at www.tahr.ca.)
