Official Portrait of the Honourable James K. Bartleman Unveiled at Queen's Park Today

TORONTO, June 15 /CNW/ - The Honourable David C. Onley, Premier Dalton
McGuinty, and Grand Chief Stan Beardy of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation joined the
Honourable James K. Bartleman in unveiling his official portrait in the
Lieutenant Governor's Suite at 3:00 PM this afternoon.
Mr. Bartleman served as The Queen's representative in Ontario from 2002
to 2007. During his mandate he is renown for implementing the Lieutenant
Governor's Aboriginal Literacy Program which helped establish libraries in
Ontario's 28 fly-in Aboriginal communities by collecting over 2 million books;
twinned Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal schools in Ontario and Nunavut; launched
the Lieutenant Governor's Summer Reading Camps; and created 'Club Amick', a
book club for children. Mr. Bartleman also strove to eliminate the stigma of
mental illness and to fight racism. During his mandate, Mr. Bartleman
participated in over 3,000 engagements and visited over 150 communities
throughout Ontario.
"This portrait reflects Mr. Bartleman's pride in his heritage and his
deep commitment to the making a difference to the lives of Aboriginal youth,
especially those in the fly-in First nation communities in the far north of
Ontario," said Mr. Onley, "He was also very effective in drawing attention to
mental health and anti-racism issues."
Traditionally, a portrait of each Lieutenant Governor is commissioned at
the end of their term. Mr. Bartleman selected Cyril Leeper, an accomplished
Ontario based portraitist, to paint his portrait. During a distinguished
international career, Mr. Leeper has painted portrayals of, among others, His
Royal Highness Prince Andrew, Malcolm Muggeridge, Cardinal Ambrozic, as well
as ten vice-regal portraits, including the Honourable Lincoln Alexander, 24th
Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and several provincial premiers, Supreme Court
Justices, chancellors and presidents of universities, archbishops, brigadier
generals of the military and many notable leaders in the private sector.
