Nova Scotians Sending Holiday Greetings to Canadian Troops Overseas

HALIFAX, Dec. 6 /CNW/ - Nova Scotians can send messages of support and
encouragement to Canadian military men and women stationed abroad this Holiday
season by visiting their local Sears store and signing one of 23 giant 4'x5'
greeting cards touring the nation beginning today through December 24th.
"Our military is a proud part of the Nova Scotian fabric and we all have
family or friends in the Canadian Forces," said Steve Harding, Store Manager,
Sears Halifax. "At Sears, this is our small way of helping Nova Scotians reach
out to show their support for the troops and their families."
This initiative is part of Sears Canada's Operation Wish, a program that
allows Canadian troops stationed abroad to send gifts to their families back
home. Copies of the catalogue were sent to Canadian soldiers, sailors and air
force personnel posted to operational missions in Afghanistan, Africa, the
Balkans, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Southwest Asia and the Arabian Gulf
region, as well as those serving on HMCS Charlottetown. Operation Wish allows
Canadian troops stationed abroad to place a customized order from the Sears
Wish Book online.
"To see people signing a card or a banner - I can guarantee as a military
member or family it's like getting a hug," says Michelle West, whose husband
is stationed overseas during the holiday season, while she and her children
remain in Halifax. "You really feel that appreciation and warmth and it lifts
you up, especially in the hard times - and there are lots of hard times."
The Nova Scotia card is one of many unveiled today at Sears stores in
cities across Canada to show nationwide support for our troops. After two days
on display at Sears Halifax, the card will appear throughout December at Sears
stores in Truro (Dec. 7), New Glasgow (Dec. 10), New Minas (Dec. 13) and
Middleton (Dec. 16).
The Christmas card tour was launched in Quebec City in early November, in
honour of the large contingent of soldiers who recently left from that region.
The first three cards loaded with signatures were then shipped from CFB
Trenton, ON and unveiled for soldiers in Afghanistan at a special event at the
Canadian military base in Afghanistan on November 30.
