Nova Scotia Employers Take Steps to Bring Former Nova Scotians Home to Work

HALIFAX, Nov. 13 /CNW/ - Some of Nova Scotia's largest employers will be
in Edmonton this week to recruit former Nova Scotians and other job-seekers
for positions back home.
Opportunities Nova Scotia has scheduled a networking event in Edmonton on
Thursday, Nov. 15 to showcase available positions and establish and maintain
connections with potential employees.
Opportunities Nova Scotia is in Calgary today, Nov. 13, and held similar
events in Toronto, Ottawa and Mississauga last week, where hundreds of job
seekers were connected with some of Nova Scotia's largest employers.
"We're expecting an average of nearly 13,000 new job openings annually
over the next five years, and we want to get out there and tell Canadians
about them," said Premier Rodney MacDonald. "By bringing together some of
Nova Scotia's top businesses, which are prepared to win employees in a very
competitive climate, we can demonstrate the strength of our economy and show
that there are high-quality jobs available right now in Nova Scotia."
Employers taking part in Opportunities Nova Scotia include Halifax
Regional Municipality, Maritime Forces Atlantic, EastLink, Dexter
Construction, Irving Shipbuilding Inc., Capital District Health Authority and
the Public Service Commission. These organizations employ about
30,000 Nova Scotians in key sectors in all regions of the province.
A virtual recruitment campaign has been created to accompany the
networking events, giving expatriates and other job-seekers living across the
country and in Nova Scotia the chance to connect with employers through
on-line job postings at .
The Nova Scotia government has hired human-resource consultants
The People Bank to facilitate the events and run the online recruitment
campaign. The People Bank will host Opportunities Nova Scotia offices in each
city for five months around the events, enabling employers and job-seekers to
connect over the longer term.
"Nova Scotians no longer have to settle for less when they move back to
the province. Employers recognize we need to offer comparable salaries,
benefits and working conditions, and we're prepared to go the extra mile to
recruit talented employees," said Don Rankin, director of human resources for
EastLink. "The quality of life in Nova Scotia has always been exceptional. Now
we're closing the gap to make it more financially appealing to work here as
Cindy and Allan MacLennan are expatriate Nova Scotians who made the
decision to return home after moving to Alberta in 2005. The newlyweds left
Nova Scotia with high expectations for starting their careers, Cindy as a
newly certified teacher, and Allan, a new graduate with a degree in community
studies. When they arrived in Calgary, they began applying for jobs, but were
surprised when they found it difficult to obtain work in their respective
"Although we may be a unusual case, we did not have success in obtaining
employment in Alberta that met our qualifications. I ended up working at a day
care, and Allan worked construction," said Ms. MacLennan. "Since we made the
decision to move back home, I am working full time, teaching Grade Primary,
and Allan has gone back to school to become a police officer. He has been
working with the Halifax Regional Police for the last year.
"Our experience in Alberta was not a negative one, we just had better
luck in Nova Scotia. We missed Nova Scotia everyday when we were away, and are
happy to be back home with good-paying jobs, closer to family and the ocean."
The Edmonton Opportunities Nova Scotia event will take place at the
Westin Edmonton Hotel, 10135 100th St. The event will run from 2 p.m. to
9 p.m.
