Co-operative (US Co-op) in North York, Ontario is the winner of this year's
award for Best Practices in Governance and Management from the Co-operative
Housing Federation of Canada.
"This co-op's actions just stood out," says Karla Skoutajan, CHF Canada's
Director, Sector Development. "This work exemplifies what a co-op can achieve
in taking positive steps toward excellent governance and management."
The co-op not only reviewed and revised all its bylaws, policies,
procedures and job descriptions, but it took the unique approach of putting
its co-op's policies into an electronic handbook for its members, and
providing computer stations for members throughout the co-op.
On May 30, in Victoria, CHF Canada will recognize US Co-op for their
achievement. The award is given at the discretion of the CHF Canada board to
celebrate a co-op that provides an innovative new ideas or original approaches
with specific measureable outcomes. Any winning best practice must reflect the
principles outlined in CHF Canada's Core Management Standards for co-op
governance and management.
In 2004, US Co-op, with help from the Co-operative Housing Federation of
Toronto (CHFT), developed and implemented an action plan for community
development. The process of following that plan over the next five years was
educational for the co-op's members.
"By making the member handbook available to everyone, the co-op has gone
beyond meeting its legal requirements. The co-op has given everyone the tools
for member involvement, understanding their rights, and playing a role in
setting the co-op's course."
US Co-op in North York is a large and diverse urban co-op with 318 units.
The co-op is a safe, secure, supportive community that is home to almost 1,000
