Nightingale announces gains in hosted electronic medical records sales as government healthcare stimulus starts taking shape

MARKHAM, ON, April 2 /CNW/ - Building on its market leadership position
in hosted (ASP) electronic medical records (EMR), Nightingale Informatix
Corporation (TSX-V: NGH), today announced that during the fourth quarter of
fiscal 2009, the company signed 148 new EMR licenses and generated over $1.2
million in new business to customers in Canada and the US. This success comes
at a critical time when the health care IT industry in North America has
become the focus of significant government investment, particularly in the
area of electronic medical records technology.
"This kind of growth is encouraging at this time," said Sam Chebib,
President of Nightingale. "Our strengthening performance shows that doctors
are turning to Nightingale and our hosted EMR just as the major healthcare
stimulus packages are taking shape. The level of commitment from both the U.S.
and Canadian governments can be seen as a major catalyst for the industry and
we are optimistic that this will have a direct positive impact on our market
and financial performance in the coming years."
North American governments are recognizing the value of electronic
medical records as a way to improve their healthcare systems while infusing
their economies. These are considered strategic projects that will reduce
costs and improve healthcare while investing in the new economies of the
technology sector. For the first time, the US federal government is taking
significant steps to drive general adoption by physicians. In Canada
investment is providing a boost to existing provincial programs with the
similar goals to those of their southern neighbours.
In the United States, where Nightingale has a broad base of existing
customers, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will invest US $19.2
billion to support the adoption of health information technology. This
economic stimulus will provide up to $44,000 in incentive payments to
physicians distributed under Medicare and Medicaid. The goal of the Act is for
every American to have an electronic health record by 2014. Nightingale On
Demand EMR is CCHIT 2007 certified.
The Act stipulates that the specific structure of these plans, in terms
of eligibility of physicians and vendors, will be determined by the end of
2009. Doctors will need to be fully operational in order to take advantage of
the funding available to them so they are being encouraged to adopt early. In
addition funding will begin to decline in total value each year once the money
becomes available.
Canadian governments are also focused on driving adoption of electronic
medical records. As part of its $30 billion budget plan to stimulate the
economy, the Canadian government pledged $500 million to support Canada Health
Infoway in its efforts to implement a pan-Canadian electronic health record.
eHealth Ontario through OntarioMD, with which Nightingale is one of only three
funded ASP vendors, plans to reach 65% adoption by physicians in the province
by 2012.
In addition to its customer base in almost every province and territory,
Nightingale has significant relationships with many larger customers including
the province of Nova Scotia, OntarioMD, Mount Sinai Hospital, and many other
large academic teaching hospitals and institutions.
Nightingale On Demand is a full featured EMR and practice management
