News release regarding statements made by a Calgary Legion member on the decision of Calgary City Council not to have city operated vehicles carry SUPPORT OUR TROOPS decals

    CALGARY, Aug. 21 /CNW/ - Alberta-NWT Command of the Royal Canadian Legion
is deeply concerned about the letter distributed yesterday to Calgary media
outlets and all Royal Canadian Legion Branches regarding an individual
member's concern over the recent decision of Calgary City Council voting not
to have city operated vehicles carry SUPPORT OUR TROOPS decals.
    The Royal Canadian Legion, in its more than eighty year history, has
never dealt with governments at any level in this manner. Policies of the
Royal Canadian Legion are made by resolution at convention or at a meeting of
the Executive Council or, in the case of individual branches where an issue is
placed on the agenda, by vote of the membership at general meetings. It is
most unfortunate that the personal opinion of one member is being publicized
as the position of the Royal Canadian Legion.
    The Royal Canadian Legion does and always has supported the Canadian
military and in fact has created a series of supplies that allow members to
both show their support for our troops and advertise their Legion affiliation.
The matter of government policy, whether it is municipal, provincial or
federal is not on the table for comment by the Royal Canadian Legion in a
public forum.
