THUNDER BAY, ON, Aug. 21 /CNW Telbec/ - Media are invited to attend a
picnic and community gathering in support of laid off paper mill workers on
Sunday, August 24, from noon until 4 pm at Chippawa Park.
Union and and political leaders who will address the gathering, beginning
at noon, are CEP President Dave Coles, Ontario Regional Vice-President Bob
Huget and Administrative Vice-President Kim Ginter; National NDP leader Jack
Layton and Ontario NDP leader Howard Hampton; and Thunder Bay Councillor
Thunder Bay Fine Papers laid off 180 workers July 16 when the plant
shutdown temporarily. They are returning to work Monday, August 25, amidst a
high level of uncertainty about the plant's future.
The event is part of the CEP's "Jobs Worth Fighting For" campaign, which
involves similar events across the country to raise awareness about the plight
of the forest industry and to call for action from governments. For more
