Newman's Own Foundation donates over US $500,000 to Canadian charities

TORONTO, May 19 /CNW/ - To mark its US $300 million milestone of charitable giving, Newman's Own Foundation today announced it will give away over US $500,000 in grants to over 30 Canadian charities.  The funds will support diverse needs such as children with life-limiting conditions, hunger and nutrition. The grants were announced by Pamela Papay, Advisor to the President of Newman's Own Foundation, at an event in Toronto, Ontario on May 19, 2011.

"We recognize the needs of communities, especially during these difficult economic times," said Mrs. Papay.  "Paul Newman was committed to helping make the world a better place. He believed in sharing his good fortune with those in need and we are proud to be able to continue his philanthropic legacy today."

For nearly twenty years, Paul Newman and Newman's Own Foundation have supported a diverse range of Canadian charities. Some of the Canadian organizations receiving the latest grants from the Foundation include:

The Stop Community Food Centre - provides access to healthy food for families in need;

Zajac Ranch for Children - provides a safe and enjoyable camp experience for children with serious and chronic illnesses and disabilities;

Ontario Association of Food Banks - provides food, funding and solutions to reduce hunger in Ontario's communities;

Breakfast for Learning - starts and sustains school-based breakfast, lunch and snack programs across Canada;

Boys and Girls Clubs' Camp - Potlach/Adventure - hosts residential summer camps for youth ages 7-17;

Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society - rescues and rehabilitates injured or orphaned wild animals in the City of Calgary and surrounding areas;

Winnipeg Harvest - provides food to people who struggle to feed themselves and their families;

Surrey Women's Centre - increases the safety of, and supports victims of domestic violence and sexual assault;

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saskatoon - improves the lives of Saskatoon children and youth by providing high quality volunteer based mentoring programs.
