KIRKLAND, QC, Feb. 24 /CNW Telbec/ - During an event held today at
Emile-Nelligan School, the Mayor of Kirkland, Mr. John W. Meaney, and Carlos
Dourado, President and General Manager of Schering-Plough Canada, announced a
partnership to provide a recycling program to the four primary schools in the
This project was born out of an idea put forward by a pupil at the
Emile-Nelligan School. During a visit to the school, the Mayor asked the
students to provide some ideas to improve their quality of life. A student
suggested implementing a comprehensive recycling program in the school, as
there was not one in place.
"I thought it was an excellent idea and I didn't hesitate for a second to
say yes. I then found a great partner in Schering-Plough to help with this
project," said Mayor Meaney today.
Mr. Dourado added: "The environment is important to everyone. We are very
pleased to have this opportunity to assist the Town of Kirkland, the students
and our community."
During the press conference, the group ENvironnement JEUnesse, which
encourages youth engagement on the environment, called upon other schools to
follow this example. "If other municipalities and companies would do what the
Town of Kirkland, Schering-Plough and Emile-Nelligan School are doing, it
would be one more step to protect our environment," said Nicolas Nadeau,
Project manager at ENvironnement JEUnesse.
The new program includes the recycling of paper, cardboard, plastic,
aluminum and glass for all the primary schools of the municipality, a great
improvement to the previous program that only recycled paper.
