OPG Completes Important Phase in Hound Chute GS Redevelopment
COBALT, ON, June 12 /CNW/ - Ontario Power Generation (OPG) held a ribbon
cutting ceremony at Hound Chute Generating Station today near the Town of
Cobalt (Ontario) to officially open the Obermeyer Weir, which will play an
important role in local water management.
Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP, David Ramsay and Coleman Township Mayor Colleen
Bélanger joined OPG's Project Director Dick Jessop and OPG's Northeast Plant
Group Manager Peter Murray to unveil the new Obermeyer Weir.
"The completion of the Obermeyer Weir represents an important step in the
completion of the Hound Chute Redevelopment Project", stated John Murphy, Vice
President, Hydroelectricity, Ontario Power Generation. "The redevelopment of
this generating station will allow Ontarians to continue to benefit from more
clean, reliable hydroelectricity from the Montreal River for the next 90 years
"The installation of the Obermeyer Weir and the significant investment
made by OPG in this project is good news for our region, as it ensures
employment, strengthens our local economy and addresses the flooding concerns
of the Marsh Bay residents" said David Ramsay MPP for Timiskaming-Cochrane. "I
am very grateful that OPG has recognised the importance in the redevelopment
of the Hound Chute Project."
The Obermeyer Weir is a water control structure built to help regulate
water levels on the Montreal River. The weir works by attaching a row of steel
gates to panels supported on their downstream side by inflatable air bladders.
The Hound Chute Redevelopment Project is a $56 million project to replace
the Hound Chute Generating Station originally put into service in 1910. OPG's
investment is directly creating 150 person years of employment in the
Timiskaming area and is scheduled to be completed near the end of 2010.
Ontario Power Generation is celebrating its 10th year of serving the
province. Building on a proud history, OPG provides the people and industry of
Ontario with clean, safe and reliable electricity - just as it's always done.
