New Intraocular Lens Offers Exceptional Vision Improvement to Presbyopic Patients

    TORONTO, Dec. 19 /CNW/ - Bochner Eye Institute, a world-renowned cataract
and refractive surgery facility has become the first centre in Canada to
implant the innovative Tetraflex(TM) Presbyopic Intraocular Lens (IOL) which
has recently been approved in Canada.
Presbyopia is the most common eye disorder in individuals over the age of
40 whereby the natural lens of the eye loses flexibility, causing an inability
to perform activities at near points (eg. reading, sewing, working on a
computer). The Tetraflex(TM) Presbyopic IOL is a revolutionary technology that
enables patients to achieve near vision as well as improve vision at
intermediate and far distances. "The Bochner Eye Institute was the perfect
choice to adopt the Tetraflex(TM) Presbyopic IOL technology in Canada as they
have always been at the forefront of medical innovation and their dedication
to improving the quality of life for patients is extremely important to them,"
said Mr. Joseph Arango, VP of Medical Sales at Coherent-AMT.
The Tetraflex(TM) IOL allows patients to regain near, intermediate and
far distance ability which is naturally present in the eye in early years but
diminishes over time. An advanced polyHEMA material enables the lens to flex
while it remains positioned in the eye. This enables the eye muscles to
naturally move the lens forward for near vision activities such as reading,
then relax the muscles for distance vision.
Dr. Raymond Stein, Medical Director of the Bochner Eye Institute states
that "patients gain exceptional vision for near, intermediate and distance
without any side effects such as halos or glare. Complications associated with
neural adaptation often experienced with other current presbyopic IOL
modalities are eliminated. This lens provides the ideal balance for patients
wishing to have an active lifestyle without compromising their vision". Angela
Walsh, one of the first patients to receive the Tetraflex(TM) lens, states
that the results have been dramatic: "The Tetraflex(TM) lens has far surpassed
my expectations. My distance and near vision are exceptional, and the clarity
is greater than I have achieved in 35 years of wearing eyeglasses and contact
lenses; I'm really pleased with my ability to read my blackberry after having
eye surgery."
Results of the Tetraflex(TM) lens currently under FDA investigation in
the US have been very impressive. Clinical data provided by the FDA study has
shown that 97% of patients say they NEVER require spectacles to drive, day or
night, or to watch TV/Theatre. And 94% of patients can read newspaper print
without spectacles.
