Nuclear plants will mean cleaner air, more jobs, reliable supply, and
TORONTO, Aug. 29 /CNW/ - The Organization of CANDU Industries (OCI)
applauds the Ontario Power Authority's recommendations to ensure a balanced
mix of energy sources is available to meet Ontario's future electricity needs.
OCI member companies strongly endorse the Integrated Power System Plan's
reliance on conservation and renewable energy initiatives as well as the
significant role for nuclear in meeting Ontario's electricity supply needs.
"On behalf of the thousands of men and women working for OCI member
companies, I'd like to congratulate the OPA for this new plan, and pledge our
support to deliver new CANDU nuclear power plants for Ontario," says President
of OCI, Martyn Wash. "Nuclear energy is a $5 billion a year industry in
Canada, providing employment for more than 30,000 people in more than 150
companies. "Here in Ontario, the economic benefits of a new CANDU project will
be tremendous" says Wash.
"Our technology driven Canadian companies have designed, built and
delivered six CANDU reactors around the world in the last 10 years - all on or
ahead of schedule, and on budget," says Mr. Wash. "These international
projects have helped keep our industries viable, efficient and ready to get to
work on building new CANDU plants here in Ontario. While other reactor vendors
have struggled during this same time, Canada's experience and a strong value
and delivery reputation has allowed us to keep selling all along."
