New Brunswickers sending holiday greetings to Canadian troops overseas

MONCTON, NB, Dec. 6 /CNW/ - New Brunswickers can send messages of support
and encouragement to Canadian military men and women stationed abroad this
Holiday season by visiting their local Sears store and signing one of 23 giant
4'x5' greeting cards touring the nation beginning today through December 24th.
"New Brunswickers take enormous pride in the way our troops represent our
country both at home and abroad," said Ron Wasser, Store Manager, Sears
Moncton. "This is our small way of helping the community reach out to the
troops and their families at this special but difficult time of year."
This initiative is part of Sears Canada's Operation Wish, a program that
allows Canadian troops stationed abroad to send gifts to their families back
home. Copies of the catalogue were sent to Canadian soldiers, sailors and air
force personnel posted to operational missions in Afghanistan, Africa, the
Balkans, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Southwest Asia and the Arabian Gulf
region, as well as those serving on HMCS Charlottetown. Operation Wish allows
Canadian troops stationed abroad to place a customized order from the Sears
Wish Book online.
"This can be a difficult time for military families when a father or
mother, a son or a daughter is deployed overseas," said Kara Lang, Chair of
the Moncton Military Family Resource Centre. "It just means so much to see
this kind of support, to know that your community, your province, your whole
country is behind you."
The greeting card will move across the province during the holiday
season. After Moncton, it will be at Sears in Saint John on Dec. 7,
Oromocto/Gagetown on Dec. 11, and Fredericton on Dec. 13th.
The Christmas card tour was launched in Quebec City in early November, in
honour of the large contingent of soldiers who recently left for duty from
that region. The first three cards loaded with signatures were then shipped
from CFB Trenton, ON and unveiled for soldiers in Afghanistan at a special
event at the Canadian military base in Afghanistan on November 30.
