New Award for Excellence in Canadian Public Sector Financial Oversight Established by Top Canadian and U.K. Accounting Bodies

     Recipient of the Inaugural CMA Canada-CIPFA Award of Excellence for
         Comptrollership in the Public Sector to be named in May 2008

    OTTAWA, Oct. 29 /CNW Telbec/ - Certified Management Accountants of Canada
(CMA Canada) and the Chartered Institute for Public Finance Accountancy
(CIPFA) today announced the creation of a new award recognizing excellence in
financial management in the public sector..
    The CMA Canada/CIPFA Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the
Public Sector has been created by top accounting bodies in Canada and Great
Britain, following up on their establishment of a new level of certification
specifically designed for public sector financial management..
    "This prestigious annual award is the first of its kind in Canada, and
will annually recognize a federal public servant or team who makes a
significant contribution to financial management and comptrollership within
the Government of Canada," said Richard Monk, C. Dir., CMA, FCMA, Chair of CMA
Canada's National Board of Directors.
    The award recipient will receive a plaque, as well as the opportunity to
make a donation in their name to a registered charity or scholarship fund of
their choice.
    The award is being announced at a dinner tonight at the Chateau Laurier
Hotel in Ottawa, where graduates of the Certified Management
Accountant-Chartered Public Finance Accountant (CMA-CPFA) Dual Designation
Program will receive their certificates. A keynote address will be delivered
by John Morgan, Assistant Comptroller-General of Canada.
    John Butler, President of CIPFA, in Ottawa for tonight's event, said the
peer-nominated award has been created "to honour innovative thinking and
exemplary delivery of comptrollership services that enhance the government's
financial management performance and meet accountability objectives to the
highest possible standards."
    A selection committee consisting of senior financial management
professionals and CMA Canada designates will evaluate the nominees and select
the recipient of the award each year.Full details on the criteria, nomination
process and deadlines will be announced in a few weeks, and will be available
on CMA Canada's web site at The first recipient of the CMA
Canada/CIPFA Award of Excellence in Comptrollership in the Public Sector will
be named in May 2008.

    The CMA-CPFA dual designation is the only accreditation in Canada
specifically designed for public sector financial managers. The program's
launch in 2005 was guided by the counsel and support of Charles-Antoine
St-Jean, who recently left his post as Comptroller-General of Canada. Mr.
St-Jean also identified candidates for the designation's pilot program. The
Office of the Comptroller General of Canada was re-established in 2003 to
strengthen government-wide comptrollership and oversight, particularly the
areas of financial management and audit.
