Negotiations with Camions Rouanda in Rouyn-Noranda - Better Job Security

    ROUYN-NORANDA, QC, Sept. 4 /CNW Telbec/ - Today, unionized workers with
Garage Rouanda in Rouyn-Noranda unanimously accepted a new seven-year work
contract. Mechanics and parts clerks were able to obtain salary increases of
19% and 20.5% respectively. "Our members are very satisfied. They wanted
better job security because of the high level of uncertainty pervading their
industry", declared Marc Thibodeau, union representative for the Syndicat des
Métallos (FTQ).
The salary increases will be applied as follows: Mechanics will receive
4.25% in the first year and 2.25% every year after that. As for Parts clerks,
they will receive 6% in the first year and 2.25% for every following year. The
average hourly wage for mechanics will be $26.83 while parts clerks will
receive on average $24.34 per hour by the end of the collective agreement.
Workers will also benefit from an additional $1.50 per hour when assigned to
the evening shift.
These workers have been members of the Syndicat des Métallos (FTQ) for
25 years. In fact, Garage Gervais Dodge Chrysler went bankrupt in 2003 and was
acquired by Camions Rouanda in 2004.
