The Terry Fox Foundation engages social media and mobile payments to support the 31st annual Terry Fox Run on September 18

Almost 40% of young Canadians are willing to make donations through mobile devices

TORONTO, Sept. 12, 2011 /CNW/ - On September 18, thousands of Canadians will participate in the 31st annual Terry Fox Run to help raise money for cancer research. And then, on September 28, millions of schoolchildren in over 8,000 schools across the country will participate in the National School Run Day.  While the purpose of the annual Run hasn't changed in the past three decades, fundraising efforts at The Terry Fox Foundation are evolving to meet the growing demands of young Canadians who are increasingly turning to social media and mobile payments to fundraise for the causes they wish to support.

In response, The Terry Fox Foundation has launched an innovative new mobile app with Artez Interactive that lets participants collect donations using PayPal and credit cards right from their iPhone, iPad or Android smartphone. The app also lets participants activate their social networks via Facebook and Twitter to generate support for their fundraising efforts.

Brett Kohli from The Terry Fox Foundation and Nicky Mezo of PayPal Canada are available for interviews to comment on:

  • How smartphones and mobile payments are changing the donations landscape
  • The role of social media in personal fundraising
  • Recent market research* which demonstrates that young Canadians (18 - 34 years of age) are embracing new ways to support their favourite causes with almost 40% willing to make a donation on a mobile device.
