TORONTO, Sept. 4 /CNW/ - For the second time today, NDP leader Howard
Hampton got his numbers wrong on tuition.
First, he said that the McGuinty government promised a two year tuition
freeze and then increased tuition immediately upon coming to office. That's
not true. Ontario Liberals campaigned on a promise to freeze tuition for two
years, and we kept that promise.
Called on that fib, he responded with another: saying that tuition has
gone up 36%.
Here's some math help for the NDP war room.
Institutions can only increase tuition by an average of 5% per year.
Professional programs can rise by up to 8%, but must be offset in other
programs so that the school doesn't exceed a 5% average.
That's 5%. Not 36%.
But really, who's surprised that Howard Hampton's NDP is having math
After all, this is the same party that once promised to freeze tuition
and then hiked it by 42%.
