NDP voted against minimum standards for long term care

Another example of NDP supporting Conservative agenda in the Legislature

TORONTO, Sept. 19 /CNW/ - Today the NDP are paying lip service to care
for Ontario seniors, but they didn't care enough to vote to restore standards
when they had the chance said Health Minister George Smitherman.
"It was just a few months ago the NDP stood in their place and voted
against introducing standards for care in long term care homes," said
Smitherman. "It's hugely hypocritical for them to pretend today they care
about seniors. They care about their votes now, but didn't stand up for their
McGuinty Liberals introduced the tough new Long Term Care Homes Act that
mandates standards cut by the Conservatives.
"We thought the NDP would stand by their principle and support our
seniors, but they turned their backs when the votes mattered," said
While the Conservatives eliminated the minimum standard of 2.26 hours per
day of care, and left seniors without even one guaranteed bath per week,
McGuinty Liberals have restored standards.
Now residents in long term care homes receive 2.86 hours per day of
personal care. And investments in long term care homes have increased by 38%
or $800 million.
"We've been increasing standards over the past four years with new
investments and restored standards. Every step of the way the NDP voted
against it. It just shows that a vote for the NDP is a vote for the
Conservative agenda," said Smitherman. "Only McGuinty Liberals are standing up
for our seniors."

The NDP record on Long Term Care:

    - Increased accommodation fees for long-term care home residents by
        more than $300
    - No increase to the personal allowance over 5 years
    - $0 increase for the raw food allowance, but increased prison food
        payments by 6.7%
