...Two-Time NBA MVP committed to staying fully connected to Canadian
fans, media and community groups
TORONTO, March 2 /CNW/ - IMG, the world's premier sports, entertainment
and media company, announced today that it has teamed up with BDA Sports
Management on the marketing of Canadian NBA star Steve Nash, giving IMG

"While my career is based in the United States, Canada is home," said
Nash. "I want to remain fully connected in every way possible, and working
with IMG, with their resources in Canada and around the world, will help me do
that. I consider myself very fortunate to enjoy a career in professional
sports, but to me it is a platform to accomplish much more, especially as it
relates to helping others."
The 35-year old Nash, best known for the prolific playmaking and
ball-handling skills that made the Phoenix Sun just the ninth player in NBA
history to win back-to-back MVP awards (2004-05 & 2005-06), is an extremely
talented multi-sport athlete and boasts a business and humanitarian resume as
multi-dimensional as his athletic interests.
"Steve Nash is not only a Canadian sports treasure, but a global icon,
and IMG looks forward to working with he and BDA on his off-court business
strategies and promotional efforts," said Brad Pelletier, Senior Vice
President and Managing Director, IMG Canada. "Steve is an example of
everything that we could hope for in a role model for young people, and our
goal is to help him reach new audiences, specifically in Canada, but also
"We recognize the endless possibilities in the Canadian market for Steve,
and believe that IMG has the resources in Canada to further maximize these
opportunities," said BDA Sports Management President and CEO Bill Duffy, who
has represented Nash throughout his entire professional basketball career.
"The combination of BDA and IMG gives Steve two of the most powerful sports
marketing engines in the global marketplace working for his best interest. We
are looking at future synergies with IMG on a complementary basis as we both
share global visualization in our practices."
In addition to his success in the NBA, Nash is an accomplished athlete in
a number of other sports including soccer, tennis, golf, hockey, lacrosse and
action sports. He comes from a strong soccer background and has a vested
interest in the game both on the field and off. Nash's father, John, played
professionally in South Africa and his brother, Martin, is the current captain
of the Vancouver Whitecaps, while Steve himself is headlining a bid to bring a
Major League Soccer team to Vancouver. He is also an investor in a women's
professional league set to launch in April.
In 2008, with fellow NBA point guard and BDA Sports Management client
Baron Davis and soccer player Claudio Reyna, Nash created 'Showdown in
Chinatown', a pro athlete and celebrity-filled grassroots charity soccer match
in New York City that became an instant internet sensation. The event will
expand this year to Los Angeles and Vancouver.
Nash's business interests are just as diverse and impressive as his
athletic accomplishments. In July, 2007, the first Steve Nash Sports Club
opened its doors in Vancouver, British Columbia, and his interest in
filmmaking led to the creation of Meathawk Productions, a joint venture with
his cousin, Ezra Holland. The company produced an advertisement for Nike, and
as a spokesperson for VitaminWater, Nash wrote, produced and directed his own
commercial spots. Nash's production company has also been hired by ESPN to
produce a biopic on the life of famed Canadian hero Terry Fox.
While he has enjoyed huge success in his professional endeavours, both on
the court and off, perhaps Nash's greatest legacy will be in his charitable
work all over the globe. The Steve Nash Foundation was formed in 2001 and is
aimed at fostering children's health by funding projects that provide services
to children and creates opportunities for education, play and empowerment. His
Foundation supports health, education and community support programs in
Canada, the United States, Paraguay, China and Africa.
Environmental activism is also at the heart of almost every project that
Steve Nash is involved in, from working with Nike to develop 'Trash Talk', a
basketball shoe manufactured entirely of recycled materials, to outfitting his
Arizona home with solar panels, to ensuring that every element of the Steve
Nash Sports Club has been developed to ensure a minimal carbon footprint,
including floors made completely from recycled car tires and shoelaces.
Married to Alejandra, with young twin daughters Lola and Bella, Nash
attended Santa Clara University and finished as the school's all-time leader
in assists before being drafted 15th overall by the Phoenix Suns in 1996. In
addition to his back-to-back NBA MVP awards, Nash has been named to the NBA
All-Star team six times in his 13-year career spent with the Phoenix Suns and
Dallas Mavericks and he currently ranks 11th all-time in NBA history in
Nash's list of awards and accolades off the court is as long as his
accomplishments on it. In 2006, TIME Magazine named Nash as one of the '100
Most Influential People in the World'; in 2007 he was named to the Order of
Canada, highlighted as USA Today's 'Most Caring Athlete', and was also the
recipient of the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award, given annually in the
NBA to the person who shows 'Outstanding service and dedication to the
community'; in 2008 he was named to Canada's 'Walk of Fame'.
