TORONTO and WINDSOR, ON, Aug. 8 /CNW/ - The National Citizens Coalition
(NCC) today announced the launch of the Face the Facts: Help Cure Canadian
Healthcare website (www.nationalcitizens.ca/facethefacts) featuring Dr. Albert
Schumacher. This website marks the beginning of a new grassroots consultation
on the state of healthcare in Canada. The NCC sponsored site is the beginning
of a nationwide dialogue that will engage Canadians and listen to their vision
for the future of our healthcare system and its delivery.
"The undertaking of this grassroots campaign will remove the political
lens that is too often used when studying our national healthcare system,"
stated Peter Coleman President of the NCC. "We have asked Dr. Schumacher to
lead the debate because as a family physician he is on the front line of a
system that is strained and because he is a proven leader in the medical
field" he noted.
"This new dialogue recognizes that access, quality and safety are the
first building blocks to the healthcare system that Canadians want," said Dr.
Schumacher. "As Canadians we have a great advantage over many of our economic
competitors that use to stem from our healthcare system and we want to hear
from the grassroots on how we can re-establish and strengthen that advantage,"
Coleman and Schumacher both stated that the healthcare system in Canada
has lost its world class status and has fallen behind other jurisdictions in
delivering healthcare to patients and their families. The newly launched
website features Dr. Schumacher in a number of video segments talking about
the current system and some of its ailing points. The website invites viewers
to share their thoughts and begin a dialogue on how to improve and bring the
system back to the status of world leader.
Mr. Coleman added that following the web dialogue Dr. Schumacher would be
embarking on a tour to speak and facilitate dialogue with people across
Canada. The outcome of these cross-country discussions will be a report
released in early 2008, and presented to federal and provincial governments.
Dr. Schumacher stressed that it is important that these consultations learn
what Canadians want, not what politicians want to promise about healthcare.
