Multiple investment personalities: Western Canadians are proactive investors

Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are strategic; B.C. residents in a
    cautious mood

TORONTO, Feb. 19 /CNW/ - When it comes to investing this RRSP season, 39
per cent of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba residents describe themselves
as opportunistic, analytical and risk-takers, making them among the country's
most proactive investors.
In contrast, British Columbians are not as bullish with only 28 per cent
identifying themselves as opportunistic, research-driven and willing to take
chances, according to a new survey released today by Franklin Templeton
Investments Corp.
The survey of 1,001 Canadians conducted by Angus Reid asked people to
identify their investment personality in the current economic climate.
"It's encouraging to see Western Canadians are thinking strategically
when it comes to their investments. Experience tells us the long-term winners
are those who look at challenging markets as an opportunity," said Don Reed,
president and CEO of Franklin Templeton Investments Corp. "History shows us
that stocks will recover. Investors should ensure they "don't lose twice" and
need to average into the markets because most gains happen at the beginning of
the recovery."
The national survey found Ontario trails much of Western Canada when it
comes to proactive investors with 35 per cent describing themselves as
analytical, opportunistic and risk-taking. More than a quarter (26%) of Quebec
residents are strategic, research-driven and not averse to risk. Men are more
opportunistic, analytical and risk-taking (40%) than women (25%) and not
surprisingly, only four per cent of Canadians age 55 and older identified
themselves as risk-taking investors.

    About the Survey:

On February 6 and 7, 2009, Angus Reid Strategies conducted an online
survey among a randomly selected, representative sample of 1,001 adult
Canadians. The margin of error for the total sample is +/- 3.1%, 19 times out
of 20. The results have been statistically weighted according to Statistics
Canada's most current education, age, gender and region Census data to ensure
a representative sample of the entire adult population of Canada.
Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
