MTS Allstream Confirms Call for Greater Wireless Competition

    Stock Symbol: MBT

OTTAWA, June 27 /CNW/ - MTS Allstream Inc. ("MTS Allstream") today has
filed its reply in relation to the federal government's consultation on the
auction framework for Advanced Wireless Services ("AWS") spectrum. This reply
responds to first round submissions, and again demonstrates the need for
greater competition and innovation in the nation's wireless industry and the
crucial role of government in enabling entry by new wireless competitors.
"Wireless trends in Canada are not going in the right direction. Canada
should aspire to take its rightful place as a global leader in wireless
communications. Yet prices are high and wireless adoption is weak by any
international standard, and the three large national providers are more
profitable than any of their global peers. We think Canada can do better,"
said Chris Peirce, Chief Regulatory Officer, MTS Allstream. "The public policy
goals of the government must be to ensure that this scarce resource, spectrum,
is issued in a manner that promotes competitive entry, innovation and choice
for Canadians and Canadian business. The expert material we are filing today
supports this position."
The material filed by MTS Allstream clearly demonstrates that designated
spectrum for new entrants, mandated roaming and tower sharing, are the
internationally-accepted and proven conditions for new wireless entry and
truly competitive market forces.
"Given recent developments in the industry, including the potential
combination of the country's two largest wireless carriers, the need for new
entry to spur competition is more important than ever," added Peirce. "Canada
will benefit from more wireless competition, and a responsible AWS auction
process is critical to helping Canadians get it."

reports supporting the case for further wireless competition in Canada, will
