- A powerful story about how far one man will go to ensure the
safety of his family
- Premieres Saturday, November 17 at 7 p.m. PT on Movie Central and
9 p.m. ET on The Movie Network
TORONTO, Oct. 30 /CNW/ - Corus Entertainment's Movie Central (western
Canada) and Astral Media's The Movie Network (eastern Canada) announce the
Canadian premiere of HBO Films' dramatic thriller Pu-239, airing day-and-date
with HBO on Saturday, November 17 at 7 p.m. PT on Movie Central and 9 p.m. ET
on The Movie Network.
Pu-239 is executive produced by Oscar(R)-winners George Clooney and
Steven Soderbergh of the Section Eight Company (Good Night, and Good Luck,
Syriana, Far From Heaven) and is based on a fictional short story by Salon
Book Award-winner Ken Kalfus. Shot in Romania and Kiev, Pu-239 was adapted for
the screen by Scott Z. Burns (writer of The Bourne Ultimatum and producer of
An Inconvenient Truth), who was also director of this film.
Set in 1995 post-Soviet Russia, this darkly humourous film tells the
story of Timofey (Paddy Considine, Cinderella Man, The Bourne Ultimatum), a
Russian nuclear power plant worker who labours in a deteriorating and
dangerous facility. After risking his life to stop a plant disaster he is
exposed to a deadly dose of radiation. With only a few days to live and no
compensation from his employers for his family's impending loss, Timofey
becomes desperate for a way to provide security for his wife (Radha Mitchell,
Finding Neverland, Melinda and Melinda) and young son. He steals a small
amount of Pu-239, weapons grade plutonium, and heads to Moscow to make a quick
sale. He soon becomes involved with a wannabe gangster, Shiv (Oscar Isaac, The
Nativity Story) and is drawn into the "New Russia", of hoods, hookers and the
black market. But one misstep after another leads to deadly consequences.
Pu-239 will also be available on Movie Central On Demand the week
following its network premiere and The Movie Network OnDemand the Tuesday
following its network premiere. The film can also be seen on Movie Central and
The Movie Network's HD channels.
