Montreal's culinary scene heats up: City's 10 best chefs named to compete in Gold Medal Plates

    MONTREAL, Sept. 12 /CNW/ - Montreal, long revered as one of North
America's leading gastronomic destinations, will defend its enviable
reputation as organizers of the prestigious Gold Medal Plates announced the
city's 10 best chefs who will be competing against each other later this fall.
The winning chef, selected at a gala event held Tuesday, November 13 at the
Marche Bonsecours, will represent Montreal at the Canadian Culinary
Championships held in Toronto next February.
    "This is a celebration of Montreal's excellence and appreciation for the
culinary arts," says event chair Patrick Palarme, CEO, GE Capital Solutions.
"Gold Medal Plates recognizes Montreal's finest chefs while supporting the
outstanding achievements of some of this country's greatest Olympic and
Paralympic athletes."
    The following chefs have been selected by Montreal's top food and wine
critics and will compete for a gold, silver and bronze medal:

    Daren Bergeron - Decca 77            Jérôme Ferrer - Europea
    Gérard Jalby - Le Saint-Christophe   Louis-François Marcotte - Simpléchic
    Roland Ménard - Manoir Hovey         Mario Navarrete Jr. - Raza
    Marino Tavares - Café Ferreira       Jean-François Vachon - M sur Masson
    Alba Delgado - BU Restaurant         Laurent Godbout - Chez L'Epicier
                   et bar à vin

    The Montreal event, emceed by Richard Garneau, will feature some of the
hottest competition going as the chefs race against the clock to create their
ultimate dish, paired with the finest Canadian wines. Each chef will be paired
with an Olympic or Paralympic athlete who will assist in the creation. Blue
Rodeo's Jim Cuddy, a self-proclaimed foodie, will perform some of his greatest
songs, for an anticipated crowd of 500. Guests will also enjoy silent and live
auctions that boast some of the most sought-after prizes available today, and
Jennifer Heil, 2006 Olympic gold medalist in freestyle skiing will cap the
evening with a motivational presentation.
    Since its inception, Gold Medal Plates has donated more than $1.5 million
to support Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes and has elevated the
profile of Canadian cuisine and wine.
