Montreal's Bed Bug Solution Shortsighted

MONTREAL, June 16, 2011 /CNW/ - As the city of Montreal gets set to consider a plan Monday to help control bed bugs, Abell Pest Control is suggesting the city's "solution" may make a growing problem worse.

The city's plan involves a series of measures to document bed bug infestations in residential buildings, including mandatory reporting of exterminations by pest control companies.

"Stigma is the reason people don't come forward in the first place," said John Abell, President of Abell Pest Control. "Requiring companies to report bed bug exterminations will make the public more anxious and reluctant to call in a professional, creating an even bigger problem by encouraging silence."

A single bed bug can turn into 1,000 adults in a little over two months, making it critical to recognize the problem and respond quickly before it turns into a full blown infestation. Six years ago bed bug calls into Abell's Montreal branch were almost nonexistent. Now it receives hundreds of calls and online inquiries each month.

"Education is the best defense in controlling bed bugs, so the public knows what to look for and how to respond quickly," said Roger Fogain, a Ph.D. in entomology, and technical support specialist at Abell in Montreal. "That's where the resources and focus should be, especially now, with one of the biggest moving days of the year coming up for residents and bed bugs."

Abell has shared its expertise with governments across Canada, as well as regional medical health officers. Abell supports the work of health officials, researchers and policy makers who will be discussing the impact of bed bugs at the upcoming Canadian Public Health Association 2011 conference in Montreal from June 19 to 22.

"We've seen too many people completely distraught over bed bugs," added Abell. It's a huge public health issue so we're pleased it's on the conference agenda. Prevention is all about education at every level."
