MMX Corumba Receives the Operating License of Its Pig Iron Plant

    RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL, August 6 /CNW/ - MMX Mineracao e Metalicos S.A.
("MMX" or "Company") (Pink Sheets:   MMXMY)(TSX: XMM)(Bovespa: MMXM3), pursuant
to Article 157 of Law 6404/76 and CVM Instruction 358/02, hereby makes the
following public announcement:

    The Company's wholly-owned subsidiary, MMX Metalicos Corumba Ltda. ("MMX
Corumba"), has been awarded the competent Operating License, which enables it
to initiate industrial operation of its Pig Iron Plant in Corumba, Mato Grosso
do Sul. The said license was granted by the Environmental Institute of Mato
Grosso do Sul (IMASUL), of the State Ministry of Environment, Cities,
Planning, Science and Technology (SEMAC).

    MMX Corumba commenced today the pre-operation of its first blast furnace
and the first commercial quality pig iron is expected for this coming Friday,
August 10th.
