OTTAWA, April 27 /CNW Telbec/ - The Honourable Helena Guergis, Minister
of State (Status of Women), today addressed the first meeting arising from a
Status of Women Canada-funded project entitled, Linking Canadian Shelters to
International Networks: First Meeting of the Network: April 27 -28, 2009 at
Ottawa, a two-day gathering aimed at linking Canadian women's shelters to an
"The need for an International Network of Women's Shelters was a key
outcome of last September's First World Conference of Women's Shelters," said
Minister Guergis. "Canadian delegates to that Conference recognized that
global trends, particularly the global economic downturn, greatly impact
Canadian women and create a greater urgency around the need for concrete,
timely and effective action.
"I am pleased that Status of Women Canada provided $25,000 to support the
Alberta Council of Women's Shelters in carrying out its project Linking
Canadian Shelters to International Networks: First Meeting of the Network:
April 27-28, 2009 at Ottawa," Minister Guergis added. "This initiative has
resulted in this important meeting."
For this initiative, the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters received
support from the Women's Partnership Fund of the Women's Program of Status of
Women Canada. This Fund supports projects that build partnerships between
Status of Women Canada, eligible non-governmental organizations and public
institutions at the local, regional and national level. To qualify, the
initiatives must work toward the equality and full participation of women in
the economic, social and democratic life of Canada.
"We are delighted that this key first gathering with the goal of
establishing an international network of women's shelters is now unfolding,"
said Ms. Jan Reimer, Provincial Co-ordinator of the Alberta Council of Women's
Shelters. "When we can all share expertise and learn from each other, we can
better address the safety and empowerment of women, and build a vibrant
community of practice of women's shelters from around the world."

the full participation of women in the economic, social and democratic life of
