VANCOUVER, Feb. 17 /CNW/ - The Learning Partnership, a not-for-profit
organization dedicated to championing a strong public education system in
Canada will be honouring Milton Wong, O.C., O.B.C., as a Champion of Public
Education at the Vancouver Tribute Luncheon on March 4, 2009. The Learning
Partnership has honoured 31 Canadians for their outstanding dedication to
public education since 1999 but, this is the first time that the celebrations
will be held in British Columbia.
Mr. Wong is known for his extensive community involvement and
philanthropy. He has had a full and varied career and he is currently the
Chancellor Emeritus for Simon Fraser University. Throughout his career he has
made a conscious effort to ensuring that our education system is one of the
best in the world.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate the dedication that
Milton Wong has demonstrated to public education throughout the years," says
Veronica Lacey, President & CEO of The Learning Partnership. "He has spent his
life leading by example and his commitment to public education in British
Columbia and Canada should be a shining example to us all."
The Keynote Speaker for the event will be The Honourable Frank McKenna,
former Premier of New Brunswick and former Canadian Ambassador to the United
States. Mr. McKenna is also well known for his dedication to public education
in Canada and was honoured by The Learning Partnership as a Champion of Public
Education in 2006.
The Learning Partnership (TLP) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated
to bringing together education, government, labour, policy makers, employers
and the community to develop partnerships that strengthen public education in
Canada. TLP has reached over four million students and education leaders
nationally since its inception in 1993.
The four programs now available in British Columbia are Take Our Kids to
Work(TM), Welcome to Kindergarten(TM), the National Technology and Innovation
Awards and Canada's Outstanding Principals(TM). Welcome to Kindergarten, the
newest program for the province, has seen tremendous growth in British
