MONTREAL, Jan. 29 /CNW Telbec/ - The Palais des congrès de Montréal
(convention centre) is proud to have been selected as the host site for the
congresses of the three (3) divisions of the International Union of
Microbiological Societies (IUMS), to be held concurrently in Montréal in 2014:
- the 14th International Congress of Bacteriology and Applied
- the 14th International Congress of Mycology; and
- the 16th International Congress of Virology.
The events will attract over 5,000 people and 100 exhibitors, and the
economic impact for Montréal is estimated at more than $16 million.
"There's no doubt the Palais' location in the downtown core and the wide
range of hotels nearby gave the city of Montréal a competitive advantage,"
admits the Palais Director of Sales Robert Cazelais. "Also, the usual
exceptional collaboration between the members of Montréal's tourism community
once again was a shining example of business tourism excellence."
These three (3) congresses will serve to create a fruitful synergy for
the delegates and the Canadian scientific community as a whole. Dr Pierre
Talbot, Professor at the Institut Armand-Frappier research centre of the
Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and chair of the
organizing committee, agrees: "The history and relevance of microbiology date
back a long time in Canada, which has been a recognized dynamic force in this
field, notably through the Canadian Society of Microbiologists. When you
combine this with the innovative partnership we enjoy with the National
Research Council of Canada, Montréal's bid really stood out."
The IUMS is an international organization that promotes research,
training and the open exchange of scientific information for the advancement
of microbiology. The IUMS has held congresses in Sydney, Paris, San Francisco
and Istanbul, among other cities.
