TORONTO, Aug. 30 /CNW/ - The Michener Institute for Applied Health
Sciences is continuing its 50th Anniversary celebrations with the unveiling of
a special mural created by Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) students.
This unveiling is one of many 50th Anniversary events for Michener this year.
The mural comes out of a contest created by Michener and OCAD to give
OCAD students the opportunity to feature their work on a large scale canvas.
The mural will be mounted on an expansive 20x20 wall on the north side of
Michener facing out onto Elm Street through glass windows and is the creation
of Monica Figueredo and Patrick Phillips, 2008 OCAD graduates. The students
produced an abstract and visually stimulating mural that is an expression of
Michener's health care philosophy to support collaboration amongst health care
disciplines. The installation engages the community and passersby in this
The mural, entitled E Pluribus Sine Qua Non, which means 'out of many
(conditions) without which there is nothing,' stood out most to the deciding
jury of art critics, artists and representatives from Michener and OCAD. Asked
to gain their inspiration from the Herophilus quote, "When health is absent,
wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight,
wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied," these students
took on Michener's challenge and responded with an abstract and visually
stimulating approach that is expressive, innovative and speaks to the
importance of connectivity and the whole.
"This mural honours Michener's past contributions to health care and also
stands as a tribute to the next 50 years," says Paul Gamble, President & CEO,
The Michener Institute. "Working with OCAD and these two talented students has
been a great experience for Michener, and is a playful and purposeful way to
showcase Michener to our community and neighbourhood."
The mural unveiling ceremony is free to the public and Michener invites
everyone from our community to come and join us for the unveiling. The artists
will be available for interviews after the mural has been unveiled. A
reception will follow.
For Michener, our 50th Anniversary is a celebration of accomplishments
from the past, enjoyment of the present and a look forward into the future at
what is to come.
