Michael Watson, Q.C. Appointed as Special Advisor Capital Markets Enforcement with RCMP Integrated Market Enforcement Program

    OTTAWA, Aug. 6 /CNW/ - The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) and the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced today the appointment of
Michael Watson, Q.C. as Special Advisor Capital Markets Enforcement with RCMP
Integrated Market Enforcement Program. This joint venture will fulfill one of
the key themes in the report prepared by Nick Le Pan titled Enhancing
Integrated Market Enforcement Teams, Achieving Results in Fighting Capital
Markets Crime - namely, enhancing relations between the Program and securities
commissions, and facilitating national coordination issues with securities
    "We are extremely pleased that the RCMP and the OSC are continuing to
collaborate in such a significant way", said OSC Chair David Wilson. "This
appointment is another step forward to strengthening the IMET and capital
market enforcement both in Ontario and nationally."
    "This appointment will further enhance the RCMP's Integrated Market
Enforcement Program," said RCMP Deputy Commissioner Raf Souccar. "We are
pleased to have someone like Michael with extensive experience and expertise
joining the IMET management team."
    Michael Watson was appointed as the Director of Enforcement of the OSC in
1999. Prior to joining the OSC, he was the Director of Enforcement and
Executive Director of the British Columbia Securities Commission. He practised
criminal law for almost 20 years, including 10 years as counsel to the Alberta
Attorney General and seven years as Director of Prosecutions in Manitoba. In
1994 he was appointed Queen's Counsel in the Province of Manitoba.
