TORONTO, Sept. 21 /CNW/ - Elections Ontario is reminding voters who are
physically disabled, blind or visually impaired, deaf and hard of hearing of
accommodations in place for the October 10, 2007 General Election and
Voter information has been distributed through a range of channels and
diverse formats to reach electors with special needs. Examples include:
- Information printed in Braille and large print
- Audio versions of voter information through Voiceprint, which are
also available on request from Elections Ontario on CD or cassette
- Voter information materials in plain/clear language electors, service
providers, helpers and others providing assistance.
All returning offices and advance polls are wheelchair accessible. In
addition, most polling day voting locations are also wheelchair accessible. If
the voting location is accessible, it will be indicated on the elector's
Notice of Registration card and on the web site www.elections.on.ca.
Electors with restricted mobility also have the option to transfer to
another voting location in the same electoral district for more convenient
access to vote on Election and Referendum Day.
All voting locations will have magnifiers for people with low vision.
This year, Elections Ontario has introduced new ballot templates with raised
numbers, Braille and cutouts to assist voters in marking their ballots.
Pens and pads will be provided to aid communication in the poll by people
who are deaf or hard of hearing. Electors may also request a sign language
interpreter to help communicate with poll officials. This must be pre-arranged
through the Canadian Hearing Society's Ontario Interpreting Services.
Electors who are unable to vote in person at an advance poll or on
Election and Referendum day can appoint a qualified elector to vote on their
behalf by proxy.
