OTTAWA, Aug. 2 /CNW/ - Creativity and bravery has propelled 32 teams from
coast-to-coast to Ottawa-Gatineau for Red Bull Flugtag, and tomorrow, SUNDAY,
AUGUST 3rd, it is finally time to see who has the right stuff. The team that
strikes a perfect balance between distance (how far the human-powered flying
machines actually fly, if at all!) and showmanship (one minute on the flight
deck strutting their stuff in a pre-launch skit) will take not only a dip in
the Ottawa River, but savour the sweet taste of victory!
Just in case you don't know - although we're pretty sure you do - Flugtag
is German for "flying day". Tomorrow, 32 wild and wacky teams from across the
country will be strapping themselves to their totally outrageous flying
machines and launching them off a 30-foot ramp into the wild blue yonder, and
ultimately, straight into the Ottawa River.
Up for grabs in this flight of flights is a pilot's training course
(grand prize), a skydiving adventure (second prize) and a paragliding
adventure (third prize). Judging our brave Flugtaggers will be an esteemed
panel of high-flyers, including: Dion Phaneuf, Calgary Flames; Patrick
Camblin, world-class freestyle kayaker; Aliya Jasmine Sovani of MTV; and
Cabbie (Cabral Richards) from The Score; and Eli Freeze (Steve Elias),
freestyle soccer athlete. There will also be a People's Choice award. Winners
will be chosen by audience SMS voting the day of the race.
