Media Advisory/Photo-Op - Ontario Science Centre Celebrates Sputnik 50 From Russia with Love: October 4th Space Party

    TORONTO, Oct. 4 /CNW/ -

    WHAT:     The Ontario Science Centre is throwing a Space Party in
              celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first artificial
              satellite Sputnik 1, which stunned the world and launched the
              space race. To commemorate the occasion, the party will feature
              Sputnik-themed displays, music, activities and observation of
              the night sky through high-powered telescopes, provided by
              members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
              Participants can also keep a watch out for the International
              Space Station (ISS) as it flies over head that evening.

              Highlighting the event is a special panel presentation,
              'Sputnik and the Space Age', featuring space scientists,
              authors, historians, and the host of CBC Radio's Quirks and
              Quarks, Bob McDonald.

    NOTE:     Ontario Science Centre spokesperson Sara Poirier who
              specializes in astronomy and space science will be available
              for interviews both pre- and at the event.
              Admission is free.

    WHEN:     Thursday, October 4, 2007
              7:30 p.m.               Event begins (ISS fly past)
              8:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.   Panel discussion - 'Sputnik and the
                                      Space Age'
              10:30 p.m.              Event ends

    WHO:      Panelists include:
           -  Bob MacDonald, Host of CBC Radio's Quirks and Quarks. He
              remembers how the Sputnik launch helped fuel interest in space
           -  Steve Lang, Canadian Space Resource Centre. He works with the
              Canadian Space Agency and has deep knowledge of the Canadian
              Space program
           -  Rob Goodwin, Author - Russian Spacecraft and

              Launch Vehicles: Heritage of the Space Race
           -  Chris Gainor, Author - Arrows to the Moon and Canada in Space.
