Over 100+ partners join forces to improve the environmental future and
health of the Greater Toronto Area

    TORONTO, June 23 /CNW/ -

WHAT: Unveiling of the Toronto City Summit Alliance's (TCSA) latest
initiative to improve the future of the Toronto Region and help
make the GTA the Greenest City Region in North America.
Release of new research benchmarking the GTA against other city
regions will be released along with a deep analysis of
environmental drivers. Specific initiatives will be announced
to tackle these drivers and over 100 initial partners from
businesses, government, and non-profit organizations will be

WHY: The report assesses the GTA's performance against key benchmark
cities and regions, and while the GTA performs ahead of some
cities and regions, it lags behind in some areas, including
carbon emissions, water quality, air quality, land use and
waste. The GTA has made some progress in addressing
environmental issues; however, there are numerous challenges to
overcome, among them: polluted water and beaches, aging,
inefficient buildings, under funded transit and poor air
quality resulting in premature death and hospital visits.
