MEDIA Advisory: Four Days with the People Who Teach the World to Read

NEWARK, DE, April 30 /CNW/ - "Thousands of Adoring Fans Maul Author" is
not a likely headline for the 52nd annual International Reading Association
convention, Literacy without Boundaries, but more than 10,000 reading
professionals from around the world will gather in Toronto for a four-day
professional development experience that will include some hero worship aimed
at children's book authors who make teaching reading wonderful and rewarding.
Book reviewers can find many story ideas from listening to authors.
Among those featured at the convention are Alice Hoffman, S.E. Hinton, Daniel
Handler (Lemony Snicket), Marc Brown, Ashley Bryan, Anita Lobel, and Deborah
Ellis. In fact, more than 50 beloved children's book authors and illustrators
will be presenting. What a great resource for promoting summer reading to
parents and children!
Dawn Anna, a teacher and mother of a child killed at Columbine High
School, and Academy-award nominated actress Debra Winger, who portrayed Anna
in a Lifetime movie, are presenting the opening address on Monday. They will
discuss school violence and overcoming adversity. After the recent rampage at
Virginia Tech, their insights have an added urgency. Other keynote speakers
are Craig Keilburger (16 May) and daughter of baseball great Jackie Robinson,
Sharon Robinson (17 May). Ontario Lieutenant Governor James K. Bartleman is
the final keynote speaker on 17 May.
Education writers may enjoy access to leading reading researchers in pre-
school, primary, and adolescent literacy, as well as authorities on struggling
learners and students who grow up in homes where "school" language is not
spoken. Even business writers may find interesting stories in presentations
aimed at preparing adolescents for employment in a highly competitive
Printed programs can be picked up in the Press Room beginning Sunday, 13
