Media Advisory − Taste the Difference the Greenbelt Makes: Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation to Announce more than $680,000 in Grants to Niagara Area Organizations


    What:  Media representatives are invited to join Friends of the Greenbelt
           Foundation President Burkhard Mausberg and representatives of
           seven local organizations for the official launch of Niagara area
           programs aimed at preserving and enhancing Ontario's Greenbelt.
           Media will be treated to a display and tasting of fine, locally
           grown treats, including breads and pastries, jams, juices, fresh
           fruits and cheeses.

    Who:   Significant grants will be announced for:

           Niagara College - for their "Greenbelt Youth Leaders" project, a
           student-led environmental initiative to build awareness, test
           environmental solutions to problems, and foster young people to
           take action;

           Brock University/Tourism Niagara - for new "Niagara Greenbelt
           Routes and Discovery Centres," giving tourists access to the
           Greenbelt experience through special interactive exhibits at area
           Tourism Centres;

           Niagara Peninsula Community Resource Centre - for "Growing the
           Niagara Culinary Trail," to increase culinary tourism and support
           local growers;

           Niagara-on-the-Lake Chamber of Commerce - for the 2007 "Niagara
           Peach Celebration Day," encouraging pride in the community and its
           agricultural roots, and promote Niagara peaches;

           Wine Council of Ontario - for their "Sustainable Winemaking in
           Ontario: An Environmental Charter for the Wine Industry," a
           project to help local wineries adopt best practices for
           environmental stewardship;

           Grape Growers of Ontario - for a "Wine Grape Replant Program" to
           help ease Niagara juice grape growers' transition to growing new
           products, including a variety of high quality wine grape
           varieties; and,

           Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers' Association - for a first of
           its kind study on the "Viability of the Fruit and Vegetable
           Industry in the Greenbelt" that looks at improving the sector's
           economic success in the Greenbelt.
