Media advisory - Vaughan library workers set up info picket, begin preparations for lockout or strike

VAUGHAN, ON, Oct. 11 /CNW Telbec/ - About 160 library workers will set up
an information picket outside the Vaughan Public Library Board meeting tonight
as the first step in preparing for a lockout or strike that could begin
October 27.
CUPE 905, which represents the workers, reached a tentative agreement
with Vaughan Public Libraries during the summer. The workers ratified the
agreement at the end of July. However, the library board did not meet until
September, at which time they rejected the agreement that had been signed by
their negotiators.
"Respect and fairness are overdue at Vaughan Public Libraries," said CUPE
National Representative Lorne Trevors. "The library board has taken steps
toward a lockout of our members by requesting a no-board report from the
provincially appointed conciliator."
"It is beyond belief that the board is prepared to see services to the
public disrupted because, for some reason, they don't like the agreement that
their own negotiators reached."
