TORONTO, Oct. 17 /CNW/ - Miloon Kothari, the UN-appointed expert on
housing rights, is on a fact-finding mission to Canada from October 8 to 22 to
prepare an official report on housing and homelessness. To date, he has been
to Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton and Vancouver, where he has met with government
officials and non-governmental organizations to collect information about
Canada's compliance with international housing rights standards and practices.
The Toronto housing forum is the only public event during his Canadian
mission. Mr. Kothari will speak on the international right to housing. He will
be joined by Barbara Hall, Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights
Commission, which recently completed a province-wide consultation on housing
There will also be special presentations from Street Health and the Dream
Team. Members of the audience will be invited to share their experiences with
Mr. Kothari, which will be incorporated into his final report.
